GREAT NEWS FOR NORLANE!
COGG APPROVES FUNDING CONTRIBUTION TO OUR SPRUHAN AVE NEIGHBOURHOOD HUB REDEVELOPMENT

Amazing news that the $400,000 funding contribution from COGG was approved formally in July at the budget meeting!! Thanks to Cr. Aitkens and Cr. Grzybek for their work in championing this significant support that will see our work continue to grow towards the vision of a healthy Norlane.
This announcement, together with the grant from Percy Baxter Foundation of $240,000 towards the on-site 5-bdr community development residence, (currently being built by Hamlan Homes) and the individuals and businesses named below, makes a significant contribution to the revitalisation of our neighbourhood.
A huge thanks also to Richard Bisinella for assisting us with advice, project management and helping connect us with a number of outstanding people and businesses who are assisting us with our design, planning and building requirements.

WE THANK AND ACKNOWLEDGE THE FOLLOWING ORGANISATIONS AND INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE MADE THIS REDEVELOPMENT POSSIBLE THROUGH THEIR FINANCIAL SUPPORT AND EXPERTISE.

SPRUHAN AVE HUB RESIDENCE NEARING COMPLETION

The Spruhan Ave Neighbourhood Hub experienced a fire several years ago which affected the on site residence. After years of development and planning, a brand new 5 bedroom residence is finally taking its place once again at the neighbourhood hub. Residents will move into the brand new home and live on site at the hub where they will work alongside community members to offer neighbourhood hospitality, care and help facilitate the various programs and initiatives at the neighbourhood hub. The house is being built by Hamlan Homes and funded by Percy Baxter Foundation.

THE AVIARY CAFE PIVOTS TO  MEALS DELIVERY AMIDST COVID RESTRICTIONS

The crisis we are all facing has meant that we have had to change the way we operate here at The Aviary Cafe so that we can continue to support our community.

We are now preparing daily Meal packs ready to eat in two sizes – to feed 2 or to feed up to 5. These can be ordered for next day delivery. We are NOT able to allow pick up from the Cafe so payment for meals must be made in advance. Delivery takes place between 3pm and 5pm Monday- Friday.

We’ve been able to mobilise our team and a bunch of volunteers to ensure that we can continue to generate revenue through this social enterprise which, in turn, ensures we can continue to employ people from our neighbourhood.

The somewhat short notice – on the implementation of Stage 3 restrictions in March – required us to build and deploy a website within a week to enable an efficient order receiving and processing system. We’re now looking at expanding delivery outside the current 15km radius from Norlane limit, to areas such as Leopold and Armstrong Creek.

The team have been very encouraged by the level of support we have received since we launched this initiative and see most of our customers returning to order week on week.  Since launch in mid-March we’ve now prepared and delivered over 3200 meals along with other assorted pantry items from our Goodness and Grains Initiative.

COASTHAVEN COMMUNITY GARDEN SEEING SIGNIFICANT GROWTH

The Coasthaven Community Garden is situated in the middle of Baptcare’s recent $40m Coasthaven development in the heart of suburban Norlane. The Baptcare site hosts an aged care facility, community hub, neighbourhood cafe and social housing. The community garden is strategically placed to be a space that connects neighbours around the important work of growing food together. Members of the community garden come from around the local area and each contributes to the garden in their own way. The fresh, healthy and highly nutritious produce grown is then distributed amongst members or dropped off in ‘care packages’ to local households on the site.
