Why do we have a Norlane Neighbourhood Profile?

Hi, I’m Di, and I’ve been living and working in our neighbourhood for a few decades now.  As someone who only just scraped through Math at school, I’m constantly surprised I’ve ended up becoming interested in data and statistics.  Who knew!  I think maybe this curiosity came about because our suburbs stats are personal – they’re about my family, friends and neighbours.  Just don’t ask me about algebra or probability & possibility though. Thanks!

So, why DO we have Norlane Neighbourhood Profile (& Neighbourhood Survey)?

Well, for a few reasons actually!

1)     It’s our data
For those of us who live and work here, this kind of information is often used to tell our ‘story’ or make decisions about what might be needed in our neighbourhood.  What does it all mean to us though?

2)     To tell more of our story
The average or snapshot statistics can help show if there has been change, or not, overtime but unpacking (disaggregating) these can show a more nuanced understanding of who we are as a community.  We are diverse – economic, social, cultural background and situation.

3)     Convenience
Not everyone is interested or has the time, knowledge or connections to ‘find out’ so it’s here {link} in one spot.  Well, whatever is public and available to the suburb level.  Otherwise, we’ve included Norlane/North Shore or 3214 postcode (Corio/Norlane/North Shore) information.

4)     Balance

Show our community’s strengths as well as areas where improvement might be needed.  This ‘balance’ came through loud and clear from residents in other local consultation I’ve been involved with.  Let’s acknowledge both strengths and deficits - the whole story.

At the moment we’re busy updating our report with the 2021 Census data so stay tuned for the next version. Notice something missing?  A gap? Let us know.
