Place based Community Development, what is it and why do we do it?

We have always been firm believers in the potential of local neighbourhoods.

This belief comes from our experience in witnessing the potential of people who come together to solve shared problems and enrich each other’s lives.

We are, what you might call place based community development practitioners. Meaning we make a conscious decision to live and base our lives in the communities we are trying to impact. For us this has meant living in neighbourhoods like Doveton in Melbourne’s east, Alice Springs and for the last 10 or so years, Norlane. Having given so much of our lives to this way of life. We have put a lot of energy and thought into the value and of this approach as a model for co-creating thriving communities as well as the ways its enriches our own lives day to day.

Place-based community development is an approach to community development that focuses on the unique characteristics and assets of a community and is centred on presence, relationships and a long term commitment to place. By living and working in our community we aim to -

  • Build on a community's strengths - every community has its own strengths and resources, and that these assets can be leveraged to support community transformation. By building on the strengths of a community, we can create shared solutions to problems that are more effective and sustainable over the long term.

  • Address the unique needs of a community - similarly, every community has its own unique needs and challenges. By focusing on the specific characteristics of a community, it's possible to develop targeted solutions that are more likely to address the specific needs and challenges of that community. This can be more effective and impactful in the long run.

  • Involve the community - Place-based community development emphasizes community engagement and participation. By involving residents and other stakeholders in the planning and implementation of community development efforts, we are able to ensure that the solutions developed are relevant and responsive to the needs of the community. This can also help build trust and collaboration within the community, which is essential for creating sustainable change.

  • Builds social capital - By living and working in our neighbourhood we aim to build trust through meaningful and long term relationships. Relationships are where we find belonging, support, and a sense of shared purpose. It's where we come together to celebrate our successes, and where we lean on each other during difficult times. Opportunities to connect and find this type of belonging help build a sense of community and social cohesion, which is essential for promoting health and well-being.

  • Supports local economic development - By leveraging the unique strengths and assets of a community we are able to help create opportunities for innovation and creativity; seeding local enterprises and businesses. These enterprises feed back into local economies, build skills and help individuals develop a sense of meaning and agency.
